CM Punk Goes To UFC; Shuns WWE

CM Punk calls himself the best in the world in the WWE, now he can try to apply that to the UFC. At UFC 181, Punk & UFC President Dana White announced that Punk had signed a new contract to compete at the 185 middleweight division in the UFC, beginning in 2015.

CM Punk UFC

CM Punk (real name Phil Brooks) is now a competitor in the UFC after his big announcement on December 6 at UFC 181.

When this came out, the MMA & pro wrestling world absolutely went insane. Punk is undoubtedly the most controversial name in professional wrestling due to his leaving WWE abruptly after the Royal Rumble in January. Punk cited that he was burned out & absolutely sick of the industry, along with not getting the opportunity to have some of the perks that top guys receive such as John Cena, Brock Lesnar, Triple H & others.

Punk also wanted to headline Wrestlemania at some point in his career, & even though he has been in many high profile matches at the biggest event in pro wrestling against the likes of Chris Jericho & the Undertaker, every WWE star wants to be the guy to close the show at a Mania event, which Punk never received.

Punk had one of the most telling interviews of all time on the Art of Wrestling podcast, hosted by his good friend, Colt Cabana, in which Punk truly opened up about all of his issues & frustrations in the WWE & such & just where his mind is at & his body.

Here is part 2 of the CM Punk interview on the Art of Wrestling –

Before I go too deep into CM Punk the UFC fighter, Id like to talk a bit more about the CM Punk who was one of the greatest WWE performers of all time.

Punk was huge on the independent wrestling circuit, especially in promotions such as Ring of Honor. Unfortunately, he came up during a time when WWE Chairman Vince McMahon still wanted the bigger guys who were “more marketable” & looked better. He wasn’t ready to embrace a performer of Punk’s caliber, until he showed up in 2006 during the weird version of ECW that was on SyFy for a long period of time.

Punk became a mainstay on there & eventually became a two-time winner of the Money In The Bank ladder match at Wrestlemania in 2007 & 2008, cashing in each time to win the WWE Championship. Even during those times, Punk was not always at the top of the card. He was near the top but in the wrestling industry, if you aren’t closing the show, the WWE isn’t really worried about you, even though you may be the guy who is the true “face of the company.”

Punk would have a great run in WWE in terms of having exciting matches, but rumors started going around that Punk was hard to deal with, a malcontent & a guy who was really a loner most days. When Punk got to 2011, his contract was legitimately up with WWE & he resigned right before the Money In The Bank PPV event in his hometown of Chicago, where his true push really came & after his amazing championship win against Cena in that event, Punk was the highlight of the card & the fans let the WWE know that they wanted to see much more of him.

But he still wasn’t getting all of the respect that he felt that he deserved. He got much better as a competitor & was still putting on phenomenal matches against all of the top guys in the company on a consistent basis. Punk was upset however, that he wasn’t getting the opportunity to main event Wrestlemania events over matches such as the John Cena vs Rock series that headlined Wrestlemania 28 & Wrestlemania 29 in 2012 & 2013 respectively.

Punk knew that the time was ticking & after the 2014 Royal Rumble, where he was eliminated very quietly, when many people felt that a situation was happening where he would face Triple H at Wrestlemania 30, Punk left the building before the next night’s Monday Night Raw episode was to air. That would be the last time Punk would ever be seen in the WWE outside of the WWE Network.

All through 2014, fans have cheered for Punk, especially when his girlfriend, now wife, A.J. Lee would be on the show. The fans hoped many days that Punk would magically show up & all would be forgotten, especially when we live in an era where guys like Hulk Hogan & the Ultimate Warrior was forgiven for many bad issues that had happened in the past in WWE. That would not be the case as we started to see Punk on TV shows such as Talking Dead & then announcing that he would do some writing for Marvel Comics & now this seals the deal with Punk taking the UFC deal.

A.J. Lee

Recently, on the Stone Cold Steve Austin podcast, McMahon mentioned that he would be open to doing business with Punk in the future, but Punk does look as though he may actually be one of the guys who says they are finished with professional wrestling & actually mean it.

As far as Punk goes in the UFC, it has been very well noted that Punk has martial arts training with the famed Gracie family & has worked with some of the best training partners in the world, but the UFC is a whole different animal of fighter. There is no way that Punk can be ready for an actual fight before 2015 due to a variety of circumstances, not to mention just being able to have a competitive fight. Yes, Brock Lesnar was able to make the transition, but Lesnar was an NCAA wrestling champion at Minnesota, Punk was not. Punk has not been involved in any other actual fight techniques professionally or in amateur ranks outside of wrestling ever, which will make this situation all the more unique.

Competitors such as Matt Brown & Michael Bisping have already said they would like a shot at Punk, & many of the fighters probably believe that Punk only got the contract because of his name & what he can do for the UFC as a brand, as the company is not as hot as it used to be just a couple of years ago. Ronda Rousey is starting to go more into Hollywood. Anderson Silva is getting older, & after this coming weekend, will either Jon Jones or Daniel Cormier be able to be the faces of the company? Having Punk (and possibly Lesnar in 2015) back in the UFC fold gets the company back to the front of people’s minds & will help to replenish some of the possible star power that could leave the company in the next few months.

My prediction is that we could see Punk in the octagon in the UFC possibly around May or early fall, around the times when another PPV attraction – Floyd Mayweather – may be fighting his biggest fights of his career against Manny Pacquiao. If the UFC doesn’t have anything that is going to even cut a small dent into the Mayweather/Pacquiao buyrate, it could be a rough 2015 for the company, so it makes sense to bring in big, credible names like Punk & Lesnar into the fold, simply for just the buyrates & make people think twice about where they are going to spend their cash this summer & fall of 2015.

WWE Wrestlemania XXX Preview & Match Predictions

The Road to Wrestlemania is finally at an end & this Sunday night, the WWE will present quite possibly its biggest event of all time – Wrestlemania 30, live from the Mercedes Superdome in New Orleans.

There are quite a few interesting scenarios to break down during this card, so let’s get right to it.

Daniel Bryan & Triple H Will Open The Card.

This match has been set up very well on Monday Night Raw over the last few months with Bryan being tremendously over with the crowd via the “yes” chants & such. Bryan has been working as the “little engine that could” against the machine that is Triple H & Stephanie McMahon, & the storyline has absolutely taken off stronger than what anyone could have probably ever guessed.

Daniel Bryan Yes

Daniel Bryan loves to say yes. He will probably be “yessing” like crazy at the end of Wrestlemania.

Although, this match was originally scheduled for CM Punk to go against HHH in just a straight up match & probably with ownership stake on the line, this is a much more attractive area because the WWE is fully getting behind Bryan in merchandising as well as on their reality show, WWE Total Divas, & on the regular Raw & Smackdown shows.

Triple H

Triple H is going to be a busy guy running WWE & having a 5-star match against Daniel Bryan at Wrestlemania.

This will be a match that will go about 25-30 minutes, early on, to establish that Bryan is truly the man in the industry against what could be considered in the story to be his “biggest test” to the WWE Championship. I see Bryan going over HHH is a physically grueling match, but a match that gives Bryan about 3.5 hours to get ready for the WWE Championship triple threat that would include him in the match with Batista & Randy Orton.

Stephanie McMahon

If I am Triple H, why wrestle when I can run the company & go home to my sexy ass wife, Stephanie McMahon?

New Age Outlaws & Kane vs The Shield

This match is going to be outstanding simply because the Shield (Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns) will work incredibly hard to make this match great.

The Shield

The Shield has been the most awesome team act in WWE over the last 2 years.

The Outlaws are great for what they are, which is an enhancement act that hopefully we won’t see much of after Wrestlemania season is over with & I fully believe that Kane is wrestling is last matches as a WWE Superstar as I believe he is going to venture into politics, finance & other areas in Tennessee.

The Shield (especially Roman Reigns) is on their way as a group & as individuals, to absolute greatness, & this is probably their last Wrestlemania together as a group so I don’t think there is a swerve coming right now, I think WWE will let the Shield dominate & shortly thereafter, get ready for a Reigns babyface run in the company.

Every WWE Diva vs A.J. Lee For WWE Divas Championship

This match will be one of the weirdest matches of the card, & sounds like we are trying to get all of the divas that Wrestlemania paycheck.

A.J. Lee

WWE Divas Champion A.J. Lee.

The divas that A.J. Lee will be facing include:

Tamina Snuka

Tamina Snuka

Nikki Bella

Brie Bella

Eva Marie

Rosa Mendes

Summer Rae

Naomi/Trinity

Cameron/Ariane

Natalya

Emma

And the winner of this match, outside of the WWE Universe, will most likely be A.J. Lee for the simple fact that this is a one-fall match & what I see happening is that each of the divas will go for a cover, argue over who should win the match, & A.J. will figure out a way to get the victory.

John Cena vs Bray Wyatt

This match could be the pleasant surprise of Wrestlemania. The build-up for this match has been very strong verbally since the Elimination Chamber. Cena has gone away from all of the funny, goofy jokes that he normally throws around for most of the matches he’s involved in, especially the big ones.

Bray Wyatt
Bray Wyatt is one of the most captivating acts
in WWE in many years.

Wyatt has been absolutely spot on. The promos that has been cutting in his live appearances & vignettes about breaking & destroying Cena’s legacy have been absolutely outstanding. Bray Wyatt & the rest of the Wyatt Family (Luke Harper, Erick Rowan) have solidified themselves as one of the top reasons that the WWE NXT program on WWE Network has been a true success in terms of bringing up new talent & talent that will be strong in the future.

Cena clearly doesn’t need the victory here. This would be a great time to push Bray Wyatt to the next level with a victory over the biggest face in the company. This will most likely be a midcard match during the show, but has the potential to be another 20-25 minute match. I think WWE will make the call to go with Bray Wyatt over John Cena. Cena will most likely be in a major feud after Wrestlemania, but Wyatt is the future right now. He’s one of the most entertaining acts, in the ring & on the mic, in many years.

Daniel Bryan, Batista & Randy Orton Go Against Each Other for the WWE Championship.

This should be the main event of this Wrestlemania, no doubt about it. Batista is going away to work on his Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy movie in terms of promotion & Orton doesn’t need to win this match right now as much as Bryan.

The WWE has got to end Wrestlemania with a Daniel Bryan victory. The push & momentum to a Bryan victory is truly what the fans have been asking for & wanting since Wrestlemania 28 when Sheamus kicked Bryan in the head & he lost the belt in 8 seconds.

I do believe Triple H & The Authority will be involved in this match somehow, & possibly even the return of Vince McMahon to television. Either now or the next night on Raw, I do believe that Vince will have some role in the future of the Bryan angle, maybe as a Bryan ally or just a separate situation against Stephanie & Triple H.

But that’s all in the future, the big thing is that Daniel Bryan will win the WWE Championship & there will be yes chants all night.

The Undertaker Defends The Streak vs Brock Lesnar

This match has not gotten the correct level of push that this match on this type of show should get. Taker looks as though he has nothing to fear at all against Lesnar, a man who is a former UFC Heavyweight Champion, quite possibly, the most legit competitor that Taker has had to go up against during the streak.

What is truly happening is that this is either going to shock the entire wrestling world with a Lesnar victory, or Undertaker is just not in the shape to go with the type of match that he has brought out in matches against CM Punk, Shawn Michaels & Triple H.

Either way, this match will somehow live up to the hype & I do think Undertaker will extend the streak, as I can’t see the WWE allowing Brock Lesnar, a part-time performer, to go over the Undertaker & end the most beloved streak in the history of the wrestling industry. If Undertaker is going to lose, however, it would either be now to Lesnar, which is buyable, or next year to possibly Sting.

In the other matches on the card, the Usos will win the tag championship & Big Show will most likely win the Andre The Giant Battle Royal.

We hope you enjoy Wrestlemania XXX, which will be on at 7:00 p.m. after a 2-hour pregame show on the WWE Network.
